PRL has extensive expertise and the proven capabilities of indigenous development of instrument in optics and lasers, supporting a wide range of research activities, including quantum science and technology, precision engineering, semiconductor industry, space technology, instrumentation for astronomy, astrophysics, atmospheric studies, and optical payloads. Several advanced instruments were developed, with components fabricated within PRL workshop, including visible and near-IR spectrographs, spectropolarimeters, adaptive optics systems, attosecond XUV laser source, single and entangled photon sources or quantum sources, velocity map imaging spectrometer, cold target recoil ion momentum spectrometer, pump-probe setups, luminescence readers etc.. Femtosecond lasers have been used for micromachining in lab applications, demonstrating superior speed and precision in diamond and polymer cutting compared to traditional nanosecond laser methods. PRL has also established a free space channel over 200 m and demonstrated free-space quantum communication. Such a free space channel and the overall expertise in quantum technologies can be used as a testbed for standardization for quantum communication technologies. The research expertise and the indigenous optical instrumentation can be extended to other fields related to medical technology, telecommunications, sensor technologies, defense, railways, the automobile industry, and the diamond industry. Further, the expertise and the capabilities of in-house developed instruments can be inculcated and fostered for the benefit of the scientific community, industry, and startups through collaborative projects, supporting the “Make In India” mission and fostering innovation and self-reliance within the country.
